AIA DESIGN RESOURCE GUIDE |
The Denver Chapter of the American Institute of
Architects Committee on the Environment and the Colorado Chapter of Architects, Designers,
and Planners for Social Responsibility created a Sustainable Design Resource Guide.
The Guide is organized according to the sixteen divisions of the Construction
Specifications Institute. Each division is prefaced by an introduction that outlines
specific concerns related to the products and systems in that division. This is followed
by product listings and information designed to help the user purchase or specify
sustainable building products.

JFKU GREEN PROJECT |
John F. Kennedy University
is embarking on a construction project that has the potential to have a significant impact
far beyond the walls of the new buildings. The decision to incorporate the cardinal
principles of sustainability into the design and construction of all buildings will turn
the eventual ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new campus into a major event. While
environmental sustainability is becoming more widely embraced, to date it has only been
used for individual buildings. John F. Kennedy University is seeking the highest
environmental standards on all buildings for the Concord site, and thus will become the
first "green campus" in the country. |
CHRISTOPHER DAY |
|
Christopher
Day trained as an architect and sculptor. In addition to designing buildings in
accordance with his ecological principles, he offers world wide consultancy on the
development and -- perhaps more importantly -- the rescue of places both indoor and
outdoor. His projects have won several awards, including a Prince of Wales award. He also
continues to lecture for a surprising variety of audiences around the world. |
BREEAM |
BREEAM is a tool that
allows the owners, users and designers of buildings to review and improve environmental
performance throughout the life of a building. It is a widely accepted and respected
scheme that sets a benchmark for environmental performance and provides a wide range of
benefits. It is independent and authoritative, being based on many years of construction
and environmental research carried out at BRE together with the input and experience of
the construction and property industries, Government and building regulators.

ALAN WATTS MOUNTAIN CENTRE |
The process of "evolving" buildings like the Alan Watts Mountain Centre
begins with the instinctual process one employs to select a niche in the land for one's
sleeping bag or tent for camping. The process ascends into more complex and rich practical
aspects that can be Art....spontaneous and natural. Here the fixated professional and
commercial factors which more and more often dominate the human environment are pushed
aside.
